Wine
Spain has always been famous for it's fine wine which are far to numerous to mention here. But do try some of them - you will not be disappointed. One of the best known brands is that of the bodegas Torres. White are Viña Sol, (medium) San Valentin (medium sweet), Rose, Rosada de Casta. Red, Corona, Sangre de Toro (Bulls Blood!). Torres also make a good brandy. The wines from the Rioja, Penedes, la Mancha or Valdepeñas regions are all good choices, and don't forget to try some of the wonderful Cava wines (champagne of Codorniu, Freixenet.
Local wine
The small villages of southern Spain all seem to make their own blend of wine. An acquired taste, but nevertheless very palatable, but be warned they are mighty potent. The better known one in the area are from Frigiliana and Competa, and taste a little bit like sherry.
Sangría
Probably the best known drink of Spain. Traditionally made from a cocktail of red wine, brandy, lemonade and diced apple and oranges and ice. But most bards here make their own 'brew' and what at first might seem tame can make you wobble after a jug of two of this 'alcoholic fruit' - but it is very refreshing. . |

Tinto Verano
Translated as 'Summer Red' which is made from red wine, ice and a local fizzy mineral called 'Casera'. The drink is very thirst quenching on a hot day
Sherry
Andalucía is the home of good sherry, the best coming from the city of Jerez. There are many many bodegas making sherry, both sweet and dry (fino). Also 'Malaga Virgen' and the 'Malvasia' wine are good ones to try an readily available in all the supermarkets.
Liquers
Spain produces many 'own brands' of liqueurs and spirits, for example after a meal in a good restaurant you may be offered a drink 'on the house' which is generally a small glass of a rich liqueur - the most common of which is 'Melocoton' (peach) and is served ice cold. Delicious!! Others are 'Quarenta Tres', or in English - '43', 'Manzana' (apple), 'Anis' (aniseed), 'Platano' (banana), or 'Pamplemoose' (grapefruit) or many more.
The famous Spanish 'Larios' gin is also very good, and the Contessa de Larios lives Maro - the small village close to the Nerja Caves. 'Bacardi' rum and 'San Miguel' cerveza (beer) are also brewed in Málaga.
To close, you will never be far from a 'local' drink here in the Costa del Sol. |
